Is there a security deposit?

Learn how much the security deposit is on TripWip, how it works, and when it is released.

Updated today

At the time of booking, and for the safety of both parties, TripWip holds a security deposit. This amount is used to cover possible minor and major damages that involve the use of the insurance policy. The deposit is a protective measure for both the host and the driver, ensuring that the vehicle remains in good condition and that any issues can be resolved quickly and transparently.

Uruguay:
In Uruguay, currently the deposit hold only occurs with debit cards, and it amounts to 300 USD. Additionally, if an incident is reported, a hold is placed for the total deductible according to the contracted insurance. After assessing the damages, if they are minor, the corresponding refund is made.

Five days after the rental ends, if no damages or pending additional charges have been reported, the security deposit will be refunded, which may take up to an additional 10 days to reflect in your account, depending on the bank.

Argentina:
In Argentina, the deposit is an amount that is always held at the start of the rental, regardless of the type of insurance contracted. The value depends on the type of vehicle:

  • Sedan or compact: 500 USD

  • SUV: 680 USD

  • Luxury cars: 2,000 USD

Five days after the rental ends, if no damages or pending additional charges have been reported, the security deposit will be refunded, which may take up to an additional 10 days to reflect in your account, depending on the bank.

Mexico:
In Mexico, TripWip holds the following deposits depending on the type of vehicle you are renting:

  • Sedan or compact: 20,000 MXN

  • SUV: 45,000 MXN

  • Luxury cars: 60,000 MXN

The deposit is released once the vehicle has been returned in proper condition. The host has a period to report any incident, and once it is validated that there are no damages or pending additional charges, the release of the amount is done immediately.

What is the security deposit used for?

The security deposit serves several important functions within the vehicle rental:

  • Deductible coverage: If an incident occurs and it is necessary to activate the insurance, the deposit will be used to cover the corresponding deductible.

  • Repair of minor damages: If the damages are less than the deductible, the held amount may be used to carry out the necessary repairs.

  • Additional charges: If the vehicle requires special cleaning (according to our cleaning policies), has exceeded the allowed mileage limit, has received reported fines immediately, or other charges generated by the driver, these costs may be deducted from the security deposit.

This deposit allows hosts to feel secure when sharing their vehicles, while drivers have the assurance that the amount will only be used if necessary and justified. Transparency in this process is key for the TripWip community to function reliably and efficiently.
