What happens if fines and/or charges are incurred during the rental period?

A guide to report any extra charges

Updated today

It is important to remember that all charges incurred during the rental period are the responsibility of the driver. Therefore, it is essential that both hosts and drivers pay attention to any charges that arise, ensuring a transparent and safe experience for all parties involved.

Whenever possible, we recommend subscribing to automatic notifications for traffic violations, in order to report charges as soon as possible.

Uruguay 🇺🇾

At the end of each trip, it is essential for the host to review the charges incurred during the time the car was rented. This includes:

  • Checking if there were toll charges.

  • Confirming if charges have been recorded on the websites of the municipalities or MTOP for charges on interdepartmental routes, (both usually take up to 72 hours maximum). Finally, on SUCIVE (this may take longer).

  • Identifying any fines incurred at the moment.

We also recommend subscribing to email notifications from MTOP at this link and from SUCIVE at this link

Reporting and Collection Procedure

  • If the host detects a charge related to the rental, they must report it to TripWip immediately using this form.

  • TripWip will hold the amount of the deposit while verifying that the charges were incurred by the driver.

  • If the driver reports the charge to the host at the moment, both parties can agree on the payment directly without the need for TripWip's intervention.

  • In case the host needs TripWip's mediation, they have a maximum period of 6 months to report the charges.

Mexico 🇲🇽

In Mexico, additional charges can be classified into three types:

  • Tolls: Just like in Uruguay, the host must report to TripWip any toll charge if they have not made a direct charge to the driver. TripWip will hold the amount of the deposit to cover these charges.

  • Fines: These are economic penalties resulting from traffic violations, such as speeding or improper parking.

  • Traffic Violations: These refer to penalties that may involve not only a financial payment but also other legal penalties. As a direct consequence of these violations, citizens face administrative sanctions that can translate into financial fines, several hours of arrest, or community service assignments.

Reporting and Collection Procedure

  • If the host detects a charge related to tolls or fines, they must report it using this form to TripWip in case they have not made a direct charge to the driver. TripWip will hold the amount of the deposit while verifying the charges.

  • In the case of a traffic violation, the host must communicate it to TripWip at contacto@tripwip with the subject "Traffic Violation in Mexico". TripWip will guide the host through the process to contest the violation, providing rental information and a written letter to present to the regulatory entity according to the corresponding state in Mexico.

Argentina 🇦🇷

In Argentina, hosts must also be attentive to possible charges incurred during the rental of their vehicle, which may include:

  • Tolls: The host must check if automatic toll charges (such as TelePASE) have been incurred during the rental period.

  • Traffic Fines: These may be due to speeding, improper parking, among other violations.

Reporting and Collection Procedure

  • If the host detects a charge for tolls or fines, they must report it to TripWip using this form within the first 90 days after the rental ends.

  • TripWip may manage the collection of the corresponding amount from the driver, using the deposit held at the time of rental.

  • If the charge is detected outside the 90-day period, the host must manage the collection directly with the driver, using the available contact information.

  • In the case of fines that may affect the ownership of the vehicle, the host can request a support letter from TripWip with the rental information to make the defense before the corresponding traffic entity.

TripWip is committed to creating a safe and collaborative community for hosts, offering clear tools and processes that facilitate the identification and resolution of unexpected charges. With dedicated attention and an efficient reporting system, TripWip works to ensure that each rental experience is fair and transparent for everyone, promoting greater trust and safety in the community.
